Janusz Korczak
"Whoever flees from history, history will catch up with him! Extraordinary circumstances demand extraordinary effort of the mind, the senses, willpower and action." ~Janusz Korczak, a children's doctor-turned-children's writer-turned-children's guardian. Korczak, born Henryk Goldzmit, was a Polish Jew who ran orphanges in pre-War Warsaw. He was known throughout Europe as a beloved writer and also as a defender of juvenile rights who taught adults to treat children with love and respect and acted on their behalf in juvenile courts. When Korczak's Jewish orphanage was ordered liquidated by the Germans, this "King of Children" joined his orphans in the Ghetto, protecting them against hunger and disease. In his final act of devotion and love, Korczak joined the children in their death march to Treblinka. Although he was offered refuge, Korczak refused to abandon his orphans to the end.
