I.B. Singer
Ok, so I'm going thru a Singer craze phase. I've been thru this before with some others, like Nabokov for example. But Singer takes the cake, for sure. I've read only two of his books thus far, but I want to read them all. I guess its at least partially a cultural thing, but oh that would be such a gross misprepresentation of his real genius. The man appears to have been a born writer. His ability to convey the subtlest nuances of feeling and desire is so incredible, he leaves the reader, or myself anyways, wanting more. Well, i don't know what more there is to say. The Slave and Shosha are the two that I've read, both tap into the rich cultural and religious background of Eastern-European Jewry, and both convey a sense of real compassion and respect for human dignity. On second thought I read Meshugeh as well, but remember it less clearly. I think in some ways it was very similar to Bellow, who obviously imitated Singer, but I appreciate the others more.
