off to barcelona.

some thoughts as i pack for barcelona:

I read Willa Cather's Song of the Lark, and though it's not the sort of book I'd have picked up on my own ( a colleague bought it for me), I rather enjoyed it. The novel portrays the successful artist as one utterly entirely committed to his art--at any cost. Ultimately the cost is one's own humanity and the committed artist is a lonely man who finds companionship only in his art. It's rather depressing and I wonder whether it's a life I'd want to live. Somehow I feel like there's too much to life to limit oneself to a single pursuit, however lofty.

I saw "Grizzly Man" --rather unsettling movie about Timothy Treadwill, a disturbed, recovering alcoholic who found his calling among the Grizzly bears of Alaska. The footage is stunning, and the person almost too odd to be tragic. But tragic he is, a man who professes to be more at home among the grizzlies than among his own, who believes in the compassion of the ferocious if beautiful species. But Treadwill could not, alas, beat the odds altogether, and when his time came the bear showed no compassion in butchering him and girlfriend to death. . . The movie's only saving grace is it's stunning footage, which Treadwill captured during his 13 summers with the bears.

Oh, and I saw, for the second time, "A Streetcar Named Desire," one of the most memorable films ever, I think.

well well tada i'm off to that glorious mediterannean country . . . perhaps i'll keep posting from there . . .

Where are the posts from Barcelona? I realize it's a little late to be wondering, but....better late than never, right?

See you soon.
